Composers write the music. A composer (Latin com+ponere, literally "one who puts together") is a person who creates music, either by musical notation or oral tradition (By simply playing it and teaching others to do the same) for interpretation and performance, or through direct distributuion of sonic material through various media like CDs or iTunes.

Lyricists put words to songs, where appropriate.
